説明
蝦蟇仙人(がませんにん)は、中国の仙人。青蛙神を従えて妖術を使うとされる。左慈に仙術を教わった三国時代の呉の葛玄、もしくは呂洞賓に仙術を教わった五代十国時代後梁の劉海蟾をモデルにしているとされる。特に後者は日本でも画題として有名。
一方、京都知恩寺蔵元時代(14世紀)顔輝『蝦蟇鉄拐図』の影響で李鉄拐(鉄拐仙人)と対の形で描かれる事が多い。明兆が「蝦蟇鉄拐図」(がまてっかいず)の模写を試みているように、遅くとも室町時代中期には日本にその作品がもたらされていた。
根付は時代・地域によって作風にけっこう違いがあり、幕末以後は西洋文化が入ってきた影響からか写実化が進んでいるし、結局戦後による使用機会のなくなったのせいで激しく現代アート化。
しかし改めて比較してみていくと、やっぱり写実+細密化される前の、古風デザインが炸裂した根付が好きだと再認識できた。

Netsuke were made in a variety of forms, the most widely appreciated being the katabori (shape carving), a three-dimensional carving. This one is in the form of a sennin (Daoist immortal).

Gama sennin standing, smiling as he holds a gourd flask over his shoulder. carved wearing long open robes, holding a gourd spray with a toad seated on his shoulder.
Immortals or tanscendents were practioners of religious Daoism, a school of Chinese thought with its origins in the fifth to third centuries BCE, which was subsequently transformed into an organized religion with a reconized pantheon of deities. Immortals were perfected beings who, through self-cultivation, were able to transcend their normal existence and take leave of their bodies.
