説明
本作は蘭川生涯唯一無二の唐犬系｢狆｣として､解剖学的に正確かつ巧妙に関節を自然紐通しで利用し､構図面ではふり返し様子はまるで憂鬱な貴夫人と見える驚異的な傑作｡作品自身も言うまでもなく､構図だけでも貴重資料と認識されている｡
狆は屋内で飼う（日本では犬は屋外で飼うと認識）犬と猫の中間の獣の意味から作られたようである。狆の祖先犬は、当初から日本で唯一の愛玩犬種として改良・繁殖された。祖先犬は、中国から朝鮮を経て日本に渡った、チベットの小型犬と見られる。詳しくはわからないが、おそらくチベタン・スパニエル系統の短吻犬種（鼻のつまった犬）で、ペキニーズとも血統的なつながりがあると考えられる。
『続日本紀』には、「天平四年、聖武天皇の御代、夏五月、新羅より蜀狗一頭を献上した」とある。天平4年は奈良時代、西暦では732年だが、このときに朝鮮（新羅時代377年-935年）から日本の宮廷に、蜀狗、即蜀（中国四川省）の犬が贈られたという記録で、これが狆に関連する最古の記録。

There are two types of dogs in Japan: Inu and Chin. Among them, “Chin” mainly refers to the aristocratic companion dog that serves the members of the royal family.
Finely carved, both with fine expressions, floppy ears, tails swung to one side, and neatly incised fur heightened with sumi, the spine precisely rendered, the underside well carved, several himotoshi between the animal and their limbs, the side and underside with asymmetrical himotoshi.
Condition: Superb condition with expected surface wear and very little age cracks. Fine, warm patina.
Literature comparison:
Though RANSEN carved several dogs, But this Chin dog with pup is quite rare. Compare a related ivory netsuke of a dog by RANSEN, in a similar pose as the mother dog in the present netsuke, 5.1 cm high, dated early 19th century, at Bonhams, The Harriet Szechenyi Sale of Japanese Art, 8 November 2011, London, lot 157 (sold for 46,850 GBP). Compare a related netsuke of a dog and young, also attributed to RANSEN and dated late 18th century.
