I always find photographs of the Belle Epoque period to be fascinating, whether of people or of nude, etc. I am not averse to enjoying pictures of the female nude and always find that women from any era can still be appealing and beautiful (quite obviously). There are quite a few explicit pictures included and it is not a book to be left around for youngsters to see. Fortunately, the relative lack of definition makes those pictures more acceptable – though I find the comparatively demure Plate 137 on page 118 (for example) much more alluring than the explicit ones.

Though I have referred to a “relative lack of definition”, the reproduction of the photos is generally excellent. Though not possible, were the exact same photos to be reproduced in 2010 high definition digital standards then they just wouldn’t have the same appeal. This is an excellent “What the butler saw” collection, originating in France and with the ‘preface’ and ‘introduction’ written in French, English and German. the book which has really turned me on to stereoscopic pictures.the curves of the female body do lend themselves to a 3-D treatment!

A truly fascinating collection of 3-D nude photographs from over a century ago. A few of the examples are unexpectedly graphic, like Victorian porn, by and large the collection is very artistic and to see such old photographs in 3-D is a rare and a real treat for the eyes.
