鹿角雕根付中鬼斧神工,巧夺天工之极品,蛤蟆仙人是早期根付常见题材,但铁拐李和蛤蟆的题材极为罕见。
类似题材在中国至迟五代十国期间刘海戏金蟾已家喻户晓。另一方面,根据京都知恩寺蔵宋末元初颜辉『蝦蟇鉄拐图』推测,14世纪以前蛤蟆铁拐李仙人的组合在中国亦广泛传播。以明兆临摹的「蝦蟇鉄拐図」(がまてっかいず)看来,日本几乎在同时代(室町前期)已出现同样题材。
鹿角制品把玩后都会有黑斑出现,因为鹿角实际上就是颅骨的突起物,外面包裹皮肤,内部也有血管通入,后期皮肤脱落,只剩下骨化角。鹿角切割时有血流出,黑点就是血干后留下的痕迹,把玩过程中脏污进入鹿角缝隙,形成黑斑。
